Education the key to reducing skin cancer within turf management and landscape industries

With approximately 34,000 cases of skin cancer and 200 melanomas caused by sun exposure in the workplace every year, Pro-Visual Publishing has responded with a call for education with its 2009/10 edition of the Sporting Amenities Guide to Workplace Safety.

This safety Guide, which is being sent out free of charge in the coming weeks, focuses on the health risks associated with overexposure to UV radiation and provides advice on preventive measures that can be put in place when working outdoors.

Practical steps for indentifying and preventing heat stress are also covered in the Guide, with symptoms of heat illness including nausea, dizziness, weakness, clumsiness, collapse and convulsions.

Turf Grass Association of Australia’s (TGAA) Victorian branch believes health and safety in the industry should be at the forefront of all workers’ minds.

“Our association provides support and technical assistance for the Turf Industry to deliver environmentally sustainable surfaces for sport and recreation,” said a TGAA Victoria spokesperson. “TGAA Victoria is pleased to support the dissemination of this information by Pro-Visual.”

Also featured in this year’s Guide are the topics of how to safely work at heights, working with pesticides and herbicides and how to minimise noise exposure.

The Guide will be directed to all landscape maintenance contractors and designers, sporting grounds, golf courses and turf management companies throughout Australia. Additional copies are available and all Guides are produced and distributed without cost thanks to sponsorship.

For further information, or to obtain additional copies of the chart, please call (02) 8272 2611, email enquiries@provisual.com.au or see www.provisual.com.au
