Port Hughes on course

The first nine holes of the PGA-standard layout are currently under construction at South Australia’s first Greg Norman-designed golf course at Port Hughes. It has been scheduled to be ready for play by next April. Forming part of The Dunes Port Hughes residential and resort development on the Yorke Peninsula, the 18-hole links-style championship course has already been earmarked by Norman as a future top 20 Australian course. The Dunes Port Hughes chief executive officer Andrew Martin says ramping up construction of the golf course will be the development’s key focus in coming months. “We plan to take full advantage of the winter months to step up the construction program for the course, which is really starting to take shape,” he explains. “Shaping of the first nine holes is on track for completion by September, which will enable tees, fairways and greens to be cultivated over spring and summer. Our goal is to have the first nine holes playable by next Easter.” Since turning his focus to golf course design, Norman has completed more than 70 golf courses on six continents, many of which have hosted sanctioned events on the PGA, Nationwide, European and Australasian Tours.

For his maiden South Australian course at The Dunes, Norman and his team of designers have planned extensive sand dunes and native vegetation throughout the course while capitalising on Port Hughes’ stunning coastal location. More than $5million has already been spent on course construction, including the shaping of holes, the creation of permanent lakes and reticulation infrastructure to support the long-term self-sufficient irrigation of the course. Located 170km north of Adelaide overlooking the Spencer Gulf, The Dunes Port Hughes is SA’s largest planned residential and resort development. When complete the 15-year project will feature more than 2,000 residential dwellings and world-class leisure facilities.
