| Lawless Lasers, a machinery manufacturer based near Shepparton in central Victoria, is increasing production of its highly successful Lawless Turf Graders…
Lasers! They create immediate thoughts of precision, perfection and consistency – just the qualities sportspeople seek in a playing surface.
Graham Lawless and one of his laser-levelling Turf Graders
Laser levelling has been around for some time, but the one of the neatest and easy-to-use turf laser levelling machines is the Lawless Turf Grader, which combines laser technology with a rugged, reliable grading unit for use on sports ovals, golf greens and tees, turf farms or almost any arena where a specific grade or level surface is required.
The system works as follows: a base laser unit is fixed at the edge of the field, and this device sends out a rotating plane of light (similar to a light house). A receiver mounted on the Turf Grader then raises or lowers the blade hydraulically to correspond with the rotating plane of laser light. GPS and 3D programs can even direct the machine to create predetermined landscapes such as golf course hills and hollows!
22-Year Evolution
“I established Lawless Lasers in 1982 after completing a fitting and turning apprenticeship,” says company owner Graham Lawless.
“The Turf Grader has evolved over 22 years of manufacturing much larger laser-controlled graders for agriculture and construction.”
Lawless says the Turf Grader has attracted interest from as far afield as the USA and Middle East, with the latest export order coming from the Doha Golf Club in Qatar. “The Club is using the Turf Grader to establish and maintain its own premium golf course, and is also leasing the Grader to other golf courses in the Gulf region,” he explains.

Locally, Australia’s major sporting ovals including the Melbourne and Sydney Cricket Grounds, the Gabba and many others, together with Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, use a Lawless Turf Grader for the rehabilitation, renovation or maintenance of their turf surfaces.
The machine is also very popular with civil contractors engaged in levelling foundations or spreading sub-grade material prior to concrete slab pouring, etc.
The Lawless Turf Grader has a working width of 2.150 metres (or seven feet) and is designed to be trailed behind a small horsepower tractor. It is equipped with a floating rear axle which is fitted with four low-pressure Trelleborg turf tyres.
“We prefer the Trelleborg tyres because they present a large, flat area on the soil surface, avoiding the creation of wheel track depressions on the finished job,” he says.
Lawless says the strongest features of the Turf Grader are solidity and simplicity, bringing together high-quality parts at a value-for-money price.
“All the steel components are laser-cut and profiled for accuracy and a top-quality, welded construction,” he says.
“We also finish off each unit with a powder coat finish so that it looks professional and has an extended, useful life.”
Resellers Welcome
Graham says he would like to hear from any resellers who believe the Turf Grader would complement their existing product lines. All spare parts in the Turf Grader are sourced “off the shelf” and are readily available for ongoing servicing needs. In addition, the machine is easy to transport as it folds into itself, and takes only two pallet spaces.
